Jan Václav Spitzer

Dimensions: 33 x 24 cm
Frame: yes

Jan Václav Spitzer (1711-1773) draftsman and painter, one of the most prolific artists of the Rococo period. He was educated in Vienna, but otherwise his work was completely tied to Prague. He drew religious motifs, painted altarpieces and portraits. He is also the author of the frontispiece with a tribute to the Czech patrons God and the Virgin Mary Staroboleslavská in the anonymous work Země dobra, i.e. the Bohemian Land (Hradec Králové 1754). The artist's signature reads "Ioan. Spitzer del. Prague". The engraving, which we find reprinted in Ferdinand Selisk's book Vejkladova svátyh ceremonie (Hradec Králové 1774), was made by Michael Heinrich Rentz.
